Name

Recipient of the 2007 Building Brooklyn Design Award, the new 20,000 GSF Fitness & Community Center was built on the same site as the original Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA building, which had been largely vacant since 1968. This state-of-the-art facility adjoins the Bedford Academy High School and an existing pool and gym building. It has two floors and is designed to expand an additional three floors in the future.

The new Fitness & Community Center is set back from the thoroughfare of Bedford Avenue to create a front courtyard that brings forward the activities of the community room and welcomes the surrounding neighborhood. The exterior brickwork was selected to complement the adjacent existing buildings.  A 2-story high membership lounge, which is located on the cellar level facing Monroe Street, brings light and visibility from the street above. A 100 FT long ceramic tile mosaic overlooks the membership lounge.  The mosaic evokes the long history of the branch by depicting a football scene discovered in an archival photograph. Easily visible through the large windows, this ceramic tile artwork engages the community.
