Name

In 2002, the YMCA of Greater New York and University Settlement, a local not-for-profit organization, entered into negotiations with a private developer to build a new facility within a residential tower. The 3-story Community Center is located on the corner of a busy intersection.  The space offered to the non-profit groups by the developer as an entrance on street level is small.  A brightly painted 30 FT high feature wall surrounds the public stair and elevator that brings the visitor to the lower activity spaces from the entrance and announces the facility from the street.  The main spaces are located on the Cellar level and include a 6 lane swimming pool, a cardiovascular work-out area, two aerobics rooms, male and female locker rooms, and administrative offices.  Although the facility was given an awkward site on the Cellar level, including space over an MTA subway tunnel, the spaces are laid out efficiently.  The pool occupies the rear of the floor and is visually and physically accessible through the open cardiovascular fitness area, which is visible from the front reception. A large gymnasium is located on the 1st level and is accessed via the Community Center.  Several multi-purpose classrooms that can be used as art rooms or community rooms are located on the 2nd level.
