The proposed Medical Research building provides Basic Science, Engineering and Clinical Research facilities for Vanderbilt University’s Medical and Engineering research faculty. With Vanderbilt University rising to No. 10 among U.S. medical schools for NIH funding and with the receipt of a recent NIH Clinical Research grant, the University required solutions to its immediate and long term Basic Science and Clinical Research needs.

A multi-phased project was developed to provide flexible space to facilitate recruitment and to promote sustainable design and LEED certification. Located on the densely populated Medical Center site adjacent to Vanderbilt University Arts and Science campus, the building is sited in a prominent and publicly accessible location and provides public amenities along an indoor atrium “street” on the ground floor.

The project incorporates the integration of Medical Research faculty labs with Engineering faculty and teaching labs which replace existing School of Engineering labs. Through this collocation of Medical Research basic science and School of Engineering laboratories, an opportunity is created for cross-departmental collaboration fostering innovative research and discovery.
