The program for the New Front Entrance Addition and Existing Lobby Renovation included a design that would complement and enhance the existing hospital, an entry that was handicap accessible, a space that would be welcoming and inviting to patients and visitors, and a new image for the hospital and the community it serves.

The new light-filled double height entry space and lobby was designed to complement the recently built Kellner wing. Below the covered canopy area, formerly an area way, the basement level was expanded to provide space for the Central Sterile & Supply. The project coincided with the construction of a new Medical Office Building, which is connected to the existing hospital and new entry way by a two-level pedestrian link.

The client requested a fresh new look to the hospital. The lightness and transparency created by the aluminum and glass double height space is carried through to the interior of the building. Where the new structure meets the interior of the building, the modular panel pattern continues, but materials transition from aluminum to white maple to reinforce the transition from entry to lobby, new to existing, and exterior to interior.

Visitors and staff have commented that the hospital has been completely transformed. It is fresh, clean and new in its appearance. At night, the glass and metal structure is lit from within and filled with soft light. The metal clad canopy illuminates the stand-off lettering of the hospital name and its signature logo.
