Faced with an aging facility, the original McBurney YMCA on West 23rd Street and 7th Avenue implemented a phased plan to renovate and improve its services. Over a number of years, new locker rooms, cardiovascular center, and aerobics room were designed and built. The second and third floors were renovated with new finishes and mechanical systems. Prior to the renovation, the second floor (Cardiovascular Center) consisted of classrooms and offices. The change of use required filing for a Place of Assembly with the Department of Buildings and reconfiguration of the stairs and lobby exits. Phasing was developed to keep the building in operation and minimize member inconvenience.
