A generous donation was made to the hospital to create a small children’s play area surrounding an aquarium within the existing emergency department waiting area. After investigating the maintenance and infection-control issues associated with an aquarium in a hospital setting, we developed a scheme with an “aquarium-theme” including custom pattern glass walls, “interactive” millwork, and a wall of detachable fish cutouts that were to be hand-decorated by local school-children.
