The Clinical Master Plan Implementation – Phase I & II involved the rebuilding and new addition to the Vanderbilt University Hospital. Faced with an aging 1970’s hospital, the Clinical Master Plan that Donald Blair Architects developed in 2001 identified the opportunity to rebuild and expand the existing hospital in place, for 1/3 of the cost of building a replacement hospital. Following the construction of a new Children’s Hospital, Phase I involved major renovations to the former pediatric 5th floor unit, including increasing the patient room size from 150 SF to 350 SF – all critical care capable universal rooms– and providing new support cores. On a site adjacent to the hospital, constrained by existing buildings on 3 sides, Phase I also included construction of a new mechanical basement, and Emergency Department expansion on the 1st floor level with infrastructure to vertically expand.

Phase II built on top of the Emergency Department with floors 2 through 10. These floors include operating suites and critical care inpatient units. DBA’s responsibilities included programming, planning, SD, DD, and management of the interior and exterior of the building through construction.
