The Endoscopy procedure rooms were located on the 2nd floor of the East Wing within an inpatient unit. To provide code compliant procedure room sizes and a proper decontamination suite, the unit was relocated to the 1st floor of the East Wing, where the EEG/ Neuro and Vascular suites were located. These rooms were relocated in order to provide space for the Endoscopy suite.  Three phases were implemented for this occupied renovation, and each was coordinated with the contractor and the hospital. The final phase created a shared decontamination room between (2) procedure rooms, an instrument store room, a prep/ recovery/ holding area for (4) bays with a nurse station, and gown waiting areas for male and female.

The 1st floor of the East Wing did not have centralized heating and cooling. Various schemes for a new air handling system were evaluated by the design team including options for a unit on the roof as well as interior units within the suite. Due to extremely low floor to floor heights (9’-0” clear) and densely populated floor plates above the 1st level, a rooftop unit would require many exterior ducts that would be visible to the residences across the street. In addition, the building is a partial steel frame with load bearing, exterior composite masonry walls, which would permit very limited amounts of small openings for ductwork penetrations.  After a thorough analysis, the design team proceeded with 2 air handling units within the new Endoscopy suite.
