The new Neonatal Instensive Care Unit (NICU) fully renovates an underutilized space on the fourth floor of Monroe Carell Jr Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt (MCJCHV) into a new suite with 12 beds and patient care support spaces. To provide more space, the existing staff lounge, pantry, locker rooms, Family Waiting Room, and adjoining staff offices were relocated.

The 12 new NICU bays are each designed with fixed, full height cubicle partitions on 3 sides (head wall and 2 side walls). Each foot wall, or entrance into NICU bay, has a privacy curtain with a glass & wood veneer wall to define the corner of each cubicle. Glass in the middle allows light from the exterior windows to enter the NICU suite. The head wall extends the full width of each bay to accommodate wall mounted equipment, including the medical gases. Each pair of bays is separated by a privacy curtain and a full height wall only at the back-to-back sink cabinets.

Decentralized nurse stations with viewing windows are located in between each pair of NICU bays. Patient support areas within the NICU suite include a medication alcove, formula prep area, a nurse workstation near the entry into the suite, and a crash cart alcove.
